Effective January 1, 2023, per NRS 484A.703, certain minor violations in Nevada will become civil infractions instead of criminal misdemeanors. |

Criminal Misdemeanor vs. Civil Infraction |

|
CRIMINAL MISDEMEANOR A criminal misdemeanor is an offense that is punishable generally by no more than 6 months incarceration and/or $1,000 fine (NRS 193.150).

CIVIL INFRACTION A civil infraction is NOT a criminal offense. The penalty for a civil infraction is generally no more than $500.00 per violation, unless otherwise authorized by a specific statute. (NRS 484A.7043). |

WHAT DO I DO IF I RECEIVE A CIVIL INFRACTION? Beginning January 1, 2023, any person who receives a civil infraction within unincorporated Clark County must still respond to the citation as they would for a criminal citation. The deadline to respond to a civil infraction citation is within 90 calendar days after the citation is issued. Your response can be either to pay the balance due to the Las Vegas Justice Court or to challenge the civil infraction citation. |

Pay Balance Due: If you do not wish to contest (or challenge) the determination that you are liable for the civil infraction as stated in your citation, you may pay your civil penalty and any associated fees by going online at www.lasvegasjusticecourt.us or by visiting the Las Vegas Justice Court Customer Service windows in person at the Regional Justice Center.

Contested Infractions: If you wish to contest (challenge) your civil infraction, you must still respond to the court in person and a court hearing date will be scheduled to contest the determination. A bond equal to the amount of the full payment of the monetary penalty, the administrative assessment and any fees specified in the civil infraction citation must be posted for a contested hearing.
